Thiessen's colourful history is deeply intertwined with that of the city of Maastricht. Our remarkable building, with 1,200 m² of authentic wine cellars, is one of the city's cultural and historical treasures. For more than 300 years, this monumental property has embodied the spirit of wine, craftsmanship, and hospitality.
1717: the start of an extraordinary Story
In 1717, the merchant Guillaume Thyssen founded his wine business from an elegant townhouse in Maastricht. He imported wines from Bordeaux and Burgundy, two wine regions that were already highly regarded at the time.
The original letterhead proudly displayed the words: "Former Bordeaux and Burgundy Wine House." Following the introduction of the civil registry under Napoleon, the original family name Thijssen was changed to Thiessen, most likely because it was easier to pronounce in French.
18th Century: rapid growth
Excise records show that Thiessen experienced significant growth during this period. At the time, drinking water was often unsafe, leading to illness and even death. As a result, wine and beer became safe alternatives. Thanks to new storage methods, such as bottling wine in hand blown glass bottles, the quality of wine improved dramatically.
1894: from city wall to wine cellar
The rear section of the building was acquired, increasing the cellar space fivefold. The oldest part of the cellar, dating back to the 14th century, once formed part of the city's defensive walls. The largest expansion of the cellars took place in 1894 to celebrate the 80th birthday of Grandmother Thiessen, who gifted the new cellar to her son, Jos Thiessen. Built from marlstone and brick, the space was specially designed for wine storage. Its naturally cool and constant climate provides the ideal conditions for ageing and storing wine.
1909: a new owner in turbulent
times
Until 1909, the wine house remained in the hands of the Thiessen family. It was then acquired by Henry van Oppen, the son of Maastricht's mayor at the time.
During the Second World War, the cellars provided shelter to British and American paratroopers, who hid inside large wooden barrels. At the same time, wine was bottled for German officers. To preserve small quantities of the finest wines for sale and private use, the wine supplied to the officers was diluted with water. The Van Oppen family remained the owners until shortly after the war.
1947: continuity and renewal
In 1947, the wine business was acquired by the Neuman family. In 1978, Theo Penris, the company's former accountant, took over. He led Thiessen with passion and craftsmanship until 2003, when the Mourmans family, former owners of Mora Snacks, acquired both the building and the business. They carried out a complete restoration, preserving this unique piece of Maastricht's cultural heritage for future generations.
In the past, every wine importer bottled their own wines. Maastricht was once home to 35 such wine houses. Thiessen was the last remaining wine merchant to continue bottling its own wines until 2012.
2015: wine shop of the year
A crowning achievement: Thiessen was named Wine Shop of the Year 2015. The jury was unanimous: "Here, you don't just buy wine, you experience it." Thiessen received a trophy, a feature in Perswijn, and an exclusive wine tour of South Africa.
Today: where historie and experience come together
Today, more than three hundred years later, Thiessen is much more than a wine shop. It is a place where we celebrate the Burgundian way of life every day.
The cellars have been carefully restored and equipped with modern sealing systems and structural reinforcements. They are also home to our vinotheque, housing exceptional bottles, including a 1953 Château Pétrus and a still drinkable sherry from 1810. In the courtyard, an enclosed City Vineyard has been planted with Pinot Noir, Gamay, and Regent vines.
Thiessen has grown into one of Maastricht's most distinctive and versatile event venues. Set within our historic building in the heart of the city, we combine timeless charm with modern facilities.
