Les Ormes de Pez 2008 is a textbook example of an elegant yet powerful Saint-Estèphe. In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby-red colour with subtle brick-red hues that betray the first signs of ageing. The nose reveals a complex palette: blackcurrants, plums and blackberries are refinedly complemented by notes of cedarwood, tobacco, bay leaf and a hint of graphite. On the palate, the wine opens with a tight structure and fresh acidity, typical of the cooler 2008 vintage. The dark fruit is supported by ripe, yet present tannins that give the wine power and ageing potential. Spices, leather and subtle vanilla notes from the wood ageing add extra layers. The finish is long and fresh, with a mineral accent that beautifully reflects the terroir character of Saint-Estèphe. This vintage is drinking beautifully now for those who enjoy classic Bordeaux, but can also refine further for several more years. It is a wine that combines power with finesse and does not deny its origins in the gravelly and calcareous soils of the Médoc.
Excellent with roasted lamb, entrecôte, game dishes or beef-based stews.
