Dauphine 2006 is a classic, Merlot-dominated Fronsac with power and finesse. In the glass it shows a deep ruby red with a slight brick-coloured rim, characteristic of the first stage of maturity. The nose is inviting and complex, with aromas of ripe cherries, plums and blackcurrants, framed by notes of cedar, vanilla and a touch of clove. A subtle hint of bay leaf and graphite adds an extra layer that is typical of Fronsac's limestone and clay soils. On the palate the attack is round and full, with juicy red and black fruit carried by a firm yet refined tannic structure. The acidity is balanced and gives the wine a lively freshness that contrasts nicely with the warm, ripe flavours. Oak ageing has added extra complexity without overpowering the fruit, with nuances of cocoa and light mocha in the background. The finish is long, spicy and elegant, leaving a lasting impression of cherry and cedar. This 2006 combines the robustness of Fronsac with a certain finesse, so that it is drinking well now and can also age for a few more years for extra depth.
Excellent with entrecôte with pepper sauce, roast leg of lamb, game dishes or a beef and mushroom stew.
