Viña Pomal Gran Reserva 2015 is a classic Rioja from Rioja Alta, made mainly from Tempranillo with a small proportion of Graciano. The wine was raised according to the traditional Rioja method: after a long maceration it aged for around two years in American oak barriques, then in large wooden vats and subsequently for several years in bottle before release. In the glass it shows a deep ruby-red colour with a garnet rim. The nose is complex, with ripe cherries, plums and blackberries, interwoven with liquorice, vanilla, coconut, tobacco and a touch of toasted oak.
On the palate, the wine is full and supple, with a fine balance between ripe dark fruit, spice and oak ageing. The long ageing has made the tannins refined and silky, while fresh acidity keeps the wine lively. The finish is long and elegant, with notes of toffee, spice and dried fruit.
Excellent with game dishes, leg of lamb, braised beef and aged cheeses such as Manchego.
