The Lagrein 2023 from Kettmeir is a red wine made from the indigenous South Tyrolean grape Lagrein, from the vineyards around the Kalterersee and the surrounding hills of Oltradige. In the glass the wine shows an intense, almost inky ruby red. The nose is inviting, with aromas of ripe forest fruit and plum, a floral touch of violets and subtle earthy and spicy accents.
The wine ferments in stainless steel tanks with skin contact and then ages for a few months in oak barrels. On the palate the Lagrein is full yet balanced, with well-defined tannins and a freshness that keeps the wine lively. Juicy dark fruit and a light spiciness make for a harmonious whole. The finish is pleasantly long, with fruity echoes and a soft, slightly earthy aftertaste.
Excellent with grilled or roast red meat, game dishes, hearty charcuterie, polenta with mushrooms and mature cheeses.
