Astruc Merlot Classique is a decidedly approachable wine that offers everything you would expect from a good Merlot from the south of France: suppleness, ripe fruit and a spicy undertone that gives the whole extra character. In the glass the wine shows a deep ruby-red colour with purple highlights that point to its youthful freshness. The nose is immediately inviting. Ripe plum, black cherry and redcurrant form the core of the aromatic palette. Beneath these unfold notes of bay leaf, a touch of black pepper and a hint of cocoa — subtle, but just enough to add tension and depth. The nose is open, expressive and at the same time uncomplicated. On the palate the wine delivers on its promise: the attack is round and fruity, with plenty of juicy notes of red and dark fruit. The tannins are velvety and well integrated, making for an enjoyable, smooth drinking experience. The structure is medium-bodied, with a lightly spicy touch that nicely supports the fruit. No excess of oak or extraction, but rather a pure expression of Merlot in a Mediterranean style. The finish is friendly and supple, with a soft, fruity aftertaste and a hint of Provençal herbs. Astruc Merlot Classique 2022 is a wine you can easily serve with weekday meals, with drinks and nibbles, or simply on its own — approachable, tasty and surprisingly versatile.
