Description:

The Rosso di Montalcino from Tenuta Fanti is made from 100% Sangiovese from the estate in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, on the southern side of Montalcino. The grapes come from some 15 hectares of vineyard with vines 15 to 20 years old, and are harvested by hand and carefully sorted. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine ages for about twelve months, partly in French barriques and partly in medium-sized casks. In the glass, a bright ruby red colour. The nose shows cherry, red berry fruit, violets and a touch of earth and herbs.

On the palate the wine is juicy and structured, with ripe cherry fruit, lively acidity and fine, grainy tannins. Accents of orange peel, spice and a hint of liquorice add depth. The finish is long, pure and lightly spicy. A Rosso with the character of a little Brunello, yet already approachable in its youth.

Food pairing:

Delicious with pasta with wild boar ragù, grilled steak, Tuscan antipasti or pecorino.

Winery:

Tenuta Fanti lies in the valley of Castelnuovo dell'Abate, on the southern edge of Montalcino, close to the Romanesque abbey of Sant'Antimo. The estate has been owned by the Fanti family since the early nineteenth century. In the early 1970s Filippo Baldassarre Fanti converted it from a tenant farm into a wine estate; the first Brunello appeared in 1980. He was president of the Consorzio del Brunello from 1998 to 2007. Today his daughters Elisa and Elena run the business. The estate has around fifty hectares of vineyards, alongside olive groves and arable land; the cellar, built into the landscape, was completed in 2004.
