Chateau de Malleret

Chateau de Malleret

Château de Malleret is a historic estate in the Haut-Médoc, located in Le Pian-Médoc, just north-west of Bordeaux. The origins of the estate go back to the sixteenth century, while the wine business took its present form in the nineteenth century. Since 1860 the château has been continuously owned by the Clossmann family, who have run the estate with passion and dedication for more than 150 years. Through its combination of historic heritage, forward-looking investment and a strong focus on quality, Château de Malleret is today one of the most renowned Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel producers in the Haut-Médoc.

The property extends over an impressive estate of several hundred hectares, of which around 60 hectares are under vine. The vines grow on exceptionally free-draining Günz gravel soils, spread across various plots, each with its own geological make-up. Château de Malleret also owns a small plot in the Margaux appellation, planted exclusively with Merlot. This diversity of terroirs makes it possible to produce wines with both power and finesse.

The plantings consist mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, complemented by Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Since the arrival of technical director Paul Bordes in 2013, vineyard management has been thoroughly modernised. The team works with precise plot selection, hand harvesting, sustainable soil management and a strong focus on biodiversity. This approach yields high-quality grapes that faithfully reflect the character of each plot.

Significant investment has also been made in the cellar. Modern winemaking facilities with concrete and wooden vats allow very precise plot-by-plot vinification. Ageing takes place in a spacious barrel cellar holding around a thousand French oak barrels. In building the new cellar, great attention was paid to sustainability, including the use of geothermal energy, natural insulation and energy-efficient techniques.

The style of Château de Malleret is characterised by elegance, freshness and balance. The wines combine ripe black fruit, cassis, cedar, herbs and subtle oak notes with refined tannins and a long, harmonious finish. They are approachable in their youth, yet also have excellent ageing potential. Besides its classic Haut-Médoc, the estate also produces a Margaux, a Bordeaux Blanc and several innovative cuvées that underline the estate's modern vision.

Alongside wine, equestrian tradition is an important part of Château de Malleret. For a long time the estate was one of the best-known stud farms in France, and it is still renowned for breeding dressage horses. The stately château, the monumental arboretum and the historic stables make the estate a unique destination where a passion for wine, nature and horses comes together in a special way.
